Quincy Jones Net Worth: Singer. Film producer. Activist. Record producer of the biggest-selling album of all time. Quincy Jones has more than made his mark on American pop culture over the last five decades, and his contributions to music and movies have seen his bank balance skyrocket.

Did you know that Quincy Jones’ net worth could be as much as $400,000,000? That’s right. 400 million. This would make him one of the richest entertainers in the world.

But how did Jones amass this large fortune? And what inspired him during his career? Read on to find out.

What Inspired Quincy Jones?

Jones was born in Chicago in 1933, the son of a bank officer and semi-professional baseball player. He has African and European ancestry, according to the PBS TV show “African American Lives.”

Jones’ mother introduced him to music. The earliest songs he can remember are religious songs, sung by his mother and next-door neighbor.

At just five or six, Jones learned how to play the piano. A somewhat difficult childhood, however, inspired Jones to succeed in his life. He already had a talent for music but he needed a lucky break.

As a child, Jones’ family moved to the Pacific Northwest, where they settled in Seattle. It was here Jones learned how to play the trumpet and arrange songs, two skills that would come in handy during his work as a record producer. Surrounded by music both at home and at school, he was inspired by Ray Charles.

Jones attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston on a scholarship, where he played in local bars with and fine-tuned his musical influences. Soon, he moved to New York City, where he started writing arrangements for artists such as Duke Ellington, Dinah Washington, and Ray Charles himself. The two had developed a friendship over the years.

Quincy Jones’ Rise to Fame

Jones’ career soon skyrocketed in New York City. He became vice-president of the record label Mercury (the first African American to do so) and composed music for the 1964 movie, “The Pawnbroker.”

After he moved to Los Angeles, Jones continued to compose movie soundtracks, and you can hear his work in films such as “Walk, Don’t Run” and “In The Heat of the Night.” He also started composing music for famous TV shows, including “Ironside” and the mini-series “Roots.”

Jones’ biggest breakthrough, however, came when he produced four singles for Lesley Fore during the 1960s. All four of these singles sold more than 1 million copies and dominated the US and U.K. singles charts. Now, every artist wanted to work with him.

One of Jones’ most famous soundtracks is “The Wiz,” which starred Diana Ross and Michael Jackson (more on that collaboration later).

But all of this success wasn’t enough for Jones. He wanted to become a film producer, too. In the late 1980s, he did exactly that when he produced “The Color Purple,” based on the famous book and starring Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey. This movie garnered 11 Academy Award nominations.

As a TV producer, he produced the hit TV show “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air,” starring Will Smith.

In recent years, Jones has published his autobiography and created a podcast where he talks to other influencers in the music industry. Both of these projects were major commercial smashes.

Jones has collaborated with various artists over the decades. One of his most famous, however, was with Frank Sinatra, whose voice complimented Jones’ innovative production techniques beautifully.

However, Jones’ biggest success came when he joined forces with Michael Jackson. The pair worked on Jackson’s solo album “Off the Wall” and again on the follow-up, the record-breaking “Thriller.” The latter holds the record for the biggest-selling album of all time worldwide, and it spawned the hit singles, “Billie Jean,” “Beat It,” and “Thriller.”

Jackson and Jones also teamed up for the charity single, “We Are the World,” which raised funds for good causes in Africa. Many famous artists appeared on the single, including Jackson himself, Diana Ross, and Cyndi Lauper.
