Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman is best known as just Zendaya.

Her career began as a backup dancer and model, and she was gracing our television screens at just 13 years of age. She was a Disney star with two hit TV series and a studio album titled: Zendaya.

In 2017, she broke out to the mainstream in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Michelle “MJ” Jones in “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”

That led to an upcoming high-profile role in the “Dune” reboot as well as roles in a slate of other films. Despite all the early success, can Zendaya’s net worth already be $5 million at just 22 years of age?

How Zendaya Rose To Fame

The future Disney star began auditioning for roles in 2009 at age 13. And when compared to the average young person following a similar path, she enjoyed almost immediate success.

She appeared in a wide range of kid-oriented ads and music videos and was operating within those same circles from which many Disney stars come up.

She auditioned for “Dance Dance Chicago” for the role of CeCe Jones. That role would go to Bella Thorne, but Zendaya did land the role of Rocky Blue as the series name changed to “Shake It Up.”

By 2010 she was already featured on TV, and Zendaya and Thorne enjoyed the second highest-rated launch of a Disney series.

Zendaya Fashion Model

An important aspect of the success Zendaya has enjoyed is undoubtedly just how diverse her entertainment education has been.

Even before landing her role on “Shake It Up,” she modeled clothing as a 13-year-old for fashion brands like Macy’s, Mervyns and Old Navy. She was featured on TV commercials, in traditional magazine ads and even on the web.

Zendaya was also a backup dancer for a Sears commercial starring Selena Gomez. This ad aimed at kids challenged them not just to “go back” to school but to “arrive.”

In 2011, a clothing line inspired by the “Shake It Up” wardrobe launched at Target. She became the face of Material Girl, a clothing line by Madonna, and in 2016, she launched Daya by Zendaya, which is her own clothing line.

No doubt that clothing line has added considerably to her net worth too.

Zendaya Movie Star

Zendaya has come a long way from her first role in the TV film “Frenemies,” and 2017 was a big year for her as she caught mainstream audiences by surprise with her role as Michelle Jones in the film “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”

As of this writing, she is currently filming the “Dune” movie reboot as the character Chani, and she has landed the starring role in “A White Lie,” a film based on the novel “The Gilded Years” by Karin Tanabe.

“Spider-Man: Homecoming” (2017)

She was no longer just K.C. Cooper or Rocky Blue. She was one of the hottest young actresses in Hollywood, so despite have a small part to play, this role contributed greatly to her overall success.

“The Greatest Showman” (2017)

Zendaya followed up “Spider-Man: Homecoming” with “The Greatest Showman,” a musical about P.T. Barnum.

She played Anne Wheeler, a trapeze artist and acrobat, and acted and sung alongside stars like Zac Efron and Hugh Jackman.

“Duck Duck Goose” (2018)

In 2018, Zendaya focused on two voice acting roles. The first of those was “Duck Duck Goose,” which aired on Netflix in the U.S. and in which she stars alongside Jim Gaffigan and Carl Reiner.

Zendaya plays Chi, half of a duckling duo that gets separated from their flock while migrating in China.

“Smallfoot” (2018)

The second voice role was “Smallfoot,” an animated film by Warner Bros. that got a theatrical release.

It features stars like Channing Tatum, Danny DeVito and even NBA star LeBron James.

Zendaya plays Meechee, a young yeti. “Zendaya is Meechee” was even an internet meme for a time.

“Spider-Man: Far From Home” (2019)

In 2019, Zendaya reprised her role as Michelle Jones in “Spider-Man: Far From Home” and gets third billing.

Her role gets more screen time in the sequel as Pete is together with his classmates in Europe.

The trailers for the film reveal Michelle as a budding romantic interest for Pete, and Marvel leans more into the iconic Mary Jane character by having “MJ” be aware of his secret identity all along.

Television is the platform that really launched Zendaya’s career and made her a household name, at least among young people and their parents.

The Disney series “Shake It Up” is particularly notable and allowed her a crossover appearance on the immensely popular “Good Luck Charlie.”

Zendaya has also landed more mature teen-oriented roles, such as Fola on “The OA” and Rue on “Euphoria.”

Her success on these early television roles helped paved the way for her net worth to reach an estimated $5,000,000.

“Shake It Up” (2010-13)

Shake It Up” is a Disney Channel sitcom that aired for 75 episodes over three seasons.

The series starred Zendaya as Rocky Blue, alongside Bella Thorne as CeCe Jones.

The young ladies are backup dancers, which allowed the show a dance component, but also high school students. The series is essentially a buddy comedy about girls growing up and working to fulfill their dreams.

“Frenemies” (2012)

Zendaya’s success on the Disney Channel gave her opportunities to star in television movies, such as “Frenemies.”

This film featured an ensemble cast of Disney celebrities, including “Shake It Up” co-star Thorne.

The central story revolves around Zendaya as Halley and Thorne as Avalon, two teen best friends who become frenemies and eventually find their way back to true friendship.

“Dancing with the Stars” – Season 16 (2013)

Her dance skills as a Disney star had earned her some mainstream attention, and in season 16 of the hugely popular “Dancing with the Stars” reality show, she became the series’ youngest participant ever.

In 2016, “Dancing with the Stars” welcomed Zendaya back as a guest judge for the Disney Night week of season 22.

“Zapped” (2014)

Zapped” was the second and thus far last TV movie Zendaya starred in for Disney.

“K.C. Undercover” (2015-18)

K.C. Undercover” is the second TV series in which Zendaya starred on the Disney Channel.

The show was created from the ground up as a vehicle for Zendaya, who was well on her way to mainstream stardom at this point.

It aired for 75 episodes across three seasons, and it centers on a high school math genius who is enlisted by her parents to work as a spy for a do-good group known only as The Organization.

“Euphoria” (2019- )

Euphoria” is an HBO series based on an Israeli program.

The series follows a group of high school students dealing with friendship, love, sex, drugs and more in the social media age.

“Shake It Up” Soundtracks

Zendaya appeared alongside Bella Thorne for three Disney-produced “Shake It Up” soundtracks.

These included “Break It Down” in 2011, “Live 2 Dance” in 2012 and “Made in Japan,” also in 2012.

She co-wrote all 12 songs that appear on the album, which AllMusic praised for its “pop thrills” and surprising lack of “growing pains.”

“The Greatest Showman” (2017)

Zendaya can be heard on three of the 11 tracks featured on the “The Greatest Showman: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.”
